Two Weeks at Tufts: An Adventure in Learning

After two weeks, one research paper, and most importantly, dozens of friendships forged, we did it! My cohort of peers from around the world can now proudly say we’ve completed a transformative experience—Tufts’ Pre-College Intensive in International Relations. Although I was just one of many students in the program, the experience was still tailored to best fit my needs and the interests of every individual student.

Arriving on day one, I could feel the energy on campus as soon as I stepped off the shuttle. The quad was ablaze with excitement, and I couldn't wait to join in! From games on the quad to field trips all around the state, every participant has ample opportunities to truly experience Tufts University.

Our classes were all taught in the Fletcher School and taught by professors who are at the top of their field. Learning about various topics under the umbrella of international relations, including economics, history, political science, even engineering and community health, was eye-opening, and gave a vast sampling of college-level coursework. Our language classes introduced us to the fundamentals of a new language, providing a foundation for further learning.

The field trips—both academic ones and those with the residential staff—were fun opportunities to get out and see more of Massachusetts and the surrounding landscape. For example, the international relations students took a field trip to the Kennedy Institute in Boston, where we simulated the Senate floor and discussed the Green New Deal and the role of the U.S. as a unipolar state. The resident counselors also chaperoned a field trip to Six Flags and paid for our rides and meals. Both were very fun days!

Tufts' location provides opportunities for dining, shopping, and more, and the support of program staff, resident counselors, and peers was very helpful. The residential students had free rein to walk to Davis Square for snacks or drinks, which I took advantage of on the daily. (The resident counselors also paid for my bubble tea once!) Going into Boston on the weekends was made easy on the T, and I enjoyed roaming around the city, seeing all the sights there were to take in.

To conclude the program, every student can choose from a list of research prompts—or can write their own. Being given the opportunity to guide my own research and provide my best work to be graded was an unmatched opportunity.

In all, Tufts provided social and academic opportunities that allowed me to build connections that will open doors for future educational and career opportunities. I am so glad that I got to taste the college experience in a hands-on environment, and the people I met will surely become lifelong friends. Lastly, the transferable skills in notetaking, researching, and public speaking will surely serve me well in college.
