At SMFA, we explored different mediums that are typically unavailable in a traditional art space. The classes were free and included a variety of subjects and teaching methods that made each day a different experience. Personally, I enjoyed the process of getting a personal studio and working on art for hours on end the most. It was an open space to explore technique and draw from past know-not to combine with new methods. Most of the student body were rising seniors, and the program helped curate potentially portfolio pieces, or at least ones that guided in the direction of meaningful, well thought out art.
Along with chunky lesson blocks, we had special days every week, where we would visit the local museums and listen to dissertations. Both the Museum of Fine Arts Boston and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum were very interesting and extremely accessible due to the proximity to the school. The masters students and professors created a comfortable environment, where artists could openly discuss their passions and thinking behind the creation itself. I thoroughly enjoyed my 3 weeks at SMFA!
