Transforming Curiosity into Passion: Tufts Mini Med School

My experience at the Tufts Mini Med School Program was incredible. From the moment I stepped onto the campus, I knew I was embarking on a journey that would deepen my understanding of medicine and challenge me in unexpected ways. This program is tailored for high school students like me, who have a passion for biology and anatomy and are curious about a career in healthcare.

During my time at Tufts, I gained invaluable skills, such as CPR and how to use an AED. These lessons weren’t just theoretical; they involved hands-on practice. I was amazed at how much I enjoyed stepping outside my comfort zone, especially when I got to see real human organs. The intensity of the program kept me engaged and eager to learn.

A key highlight of the program was learning CPR. I learned how to perform it on both adults and infants—skills that can truly save lives. The instructors were not only knowledgeable but also made the learning enjoyable. They treated us like young adults, giving us the tools to understand the importance of what we were learning.

For instance, in the Simulation Lab, I had the chance to practice IVs on a mannequin, using proper techniques to ensure accuracy and effectiveness. We even had a demonstration of intubation use, which I had seen in shows like Grey's Anatomy but never seen in real action. By the end of the week, consistently practicing these skills made me feel confident that I could respond effectively in an emergency as a teenager. This experience further fueled my desire to pursue a healthcare career.

The program included days when we could explore Boston, a city rich in history and culture. On our first exploration day, my friend and I got a bit lost, but that prepared us for the second time around. This spontaneous adventure turned into one of my favorite memories.

Activities like visiting Davis Square and Quincy Market offered a chance to immerse ourselves in the local culture. Each outing allowed me to bond with peers, creating connections that will last beyond the program.

Campus life at Tufts was vibrant and engaging. The quad was a favorite hangout for my friends and me, where we played volleyball, frisbee, and soccer. These breaks from our rigorous learning schedule helped us bond and unwind.

One memorable experience was Ice Cream Day after our orientation. Sitting with new friends and custom-making our ice creams felt special and made introductions easier. In the dining hall, I looked forward to the great selection of meals, especially breakfast, where my favorites were potatoes, eggs, and waffles.

While in Boston, I also had a great time exploring the local food scene. One standout was Birdies Hot Chicken, where I savored some of the best chicken tenders I've ever had. The flavors were bold. We also found a ping pong venue near our residence. Spending hours playing and laughing was not only fun but also strengthened our friendships. These off-campus experiences provided a well-deserved break from our schedules and added to the overall enjoyment of the program.

The Tufts Mini Med School Program reaffirmed my desire to pursue nursing but also opened my eyes to the possibility of becoming a Physician Assistant. The program provided a broad view of the medical field, and I found the idea of being involved in patient care appealing.

I enrolled in the Tufts Mini Med School Program to prepare for my future and clarify my career path. This experience was eye-opening and clarified my goals, making me feel more confident about my decisions.

My journey at the Tufts Mini Med School Program was nothing short of transformative. I gained essential life-saving skills, explored Boston’s vibrant culture, and forged meaningful friendships. The program’s realistic approach to medical education provided me with a deeper understanding of the field and reinforced my passion for healthcare.

I highly recommend this program to high school students interested in medicine or biology. It offers a unique blend of hands-on experience and career exploration. Whether you aspire to be a nurse, a Physician Assistant, or simply want to learn more about the human body, the Tufts Mini Med School Program is an excellent choice.

I left feeling inspired about my future in the medical field. I am excited to see where this journey takes me next.
