Attending Tufts' Lab Science Investigation (LSI) program was one of the highlights of my summer. LSI was an eye opening and highly enjoyable experience. This was my first time doing a rather intensive course on lab sciences, and I didn’t know what to expect. The professors and TA’s were super friendly and supportive and made sure I would fully understand the topics covered in class. Every day when I walked into the lectures or classes with TAs, they would always be smiling and enthusiastic about teaching us new things and answering questions. My TA also focused on the well-being of my group to make sure we weren’t going to be too stressed out with all the new information from lectures and labs.
I went into the program thinking it would focus on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) on a microbiology scale, but I came out understanding it not just on the microbiology scale, but all the way up to the community scale. This was highlighted as we visited the vet school campus in Grafton and the medical school campus in downtown Boston to learn from experts in different fields and gain their perspectives on the same situation. This highly impacted my perspective on AMR, which has completely changed, and I’ve been so excited to share my newfound knowledge to friends and family.
Overall, LSI was a wonderful and impactful program which I would highly recommend to any students interested in sciences and wanting to gain some lab work experience and learn more about how to be a good scientist. It is also a great way to see whether the scientific research sector would be a right fit in the future!
