Discovering the Allure of Research

When my guidance counselor introduced me to Tufts Summer Research Experience (TSRE), specifically highlighting the program being held in the Development of Identity and Community Engagement (DICE) lab, my initial reaction was of interest and intrigue. As I worked on the application, my excitement gradually grew, culminating in the unexpected delight of receiving an acceptance letter. Anticipation built as I eagerly awaited the commencement of the program.

Upon entering the lab, I found myself captivated by the research conducted by its Principal Investigator, Professor Sara Johnson. Despite an initial lack of immediate connection to the concepts explored in the articles studied alongside my peers at the lab, my perspective shifted weeks later during the beginning of our assignment to conduct our own mini pilot study. It was at this moment that the allure of research, particularly within the realm of social sciences, finally became clear to me. What truly set this experience apart was its scope, surpassing my initial expectations. I had the privilege of actively engaging in in-lab activities while also delving into a plethora of other research initiatives spanning both the Child Study and Human Development Department as well as the Psychology Department. This interactive and transformative exposure allowed me to contribute to the creation of a comprehensible interview, conduct two interviews myself, transcribe these discussions, and subsequently analyze all 6 transcriptions. Visiting neighboring labs and listening to graduate students further broadened my horizons, highlighting the vast diversity in researchers‚ backgrounds, fields of expertise, and areas of interest. This exploration allowed me to discern more clearly what paths resonated with me and those that did not. The culmination of our six-week journey came with presenting and conveying our work via a research poster presentation. In conclusion, from an academic standpoint, it was one of the most formative, career-shaping experiences in my journey so far, profoundly shaping someone who is now tremendously enthusiastic about research.
